Slothfest
To make a long story short (because I am too lazy to do this any other way), I had rheumatic fever and it sucked like ass and hotcakes. It was, however, the perfect excuse to miss an exam that I didn't study for and to stay the hell away from people, places, and certain evil Physical and Organic Chemistry concepts and the respective professors that they belch forth from. Too bad though, this will be the first and last time I will be using this excuse, and not in a sissy one-hit-wonder-chicken-pox kind of way. A 2nd attack is possible and could do damage to my sweet little heart. Not fun. In fact, less fun than sitting through a lecture on the three laws of thermodynamics while sliding down a 10-foot razor and into a bucket of alco... you get the picture.

Curve Ball
Every once in a while life throws you one. I woke up Wednesday morning with a sore, swollen right wrist, which was odd because I couldn't think of anything I did during or right before my sleep that could have caused trauma to it. Not thinking much of the whole thing, I drove to school with one arm on a sling; wrist ben-gayed and bandaged (showering with only one hand was a bitch). Some of my org colleagues were kind enough to help me carry two boxes and a component, sound equipment I brought for our career talk that day.
It felt good when people showed their concern, but honestly, after a while it started to get to me. Case in point:
Concerned Individual #1: Oh my gosh..what happened to you??
Me: Some weird sprain. I really don’t know how I got it. Just woke up and there it was.
Concerned Individual #1: You want me to get you anything from the mall?
Me: (ang sweet…pogi points pala ang pilay.) =)
Concerned Individual #2: Ano nangyari? Ok ka lang?
Me: Sprain. Di ko alam bakit. Baka kinukulam ako hehe
Concerned Individual #2: Ngek! Bakit nga??
Me: (Amp! Totoo yun! Except yung kulam.) =)
Concerned Individual #3: Ano nangyari sayo??
Me: Sprain lang ata. Di ko alam kung ano nangyari. Nagising lang ako tapos yun.
Concerned Individual #3: Sabi mo nga. Sino ba kasi kasama mo sa kama?
Me: (Amp ulit! I swear it is true.) =)
Concerned Individual #4: Is it broken? How’d it happen?
Me: Sprain I think. Don’t know why.
Concerned Individual #4: Weird! Pwede ba yun?
Me: (Maniwala naman kayo! Amf!) =)
…
Concerned Individual #n: Ano nangyari sayo, dude??
Me: Basketball.
Concerned Individual #n: Ouch! Sige, ingat.
Me: Sige, thanks! >=)
Sometimes you gotta give em what they wanna hear. The fun kinda stopped there though.
One hour into the career talk, my wrist was throbbing and my arm started to tingle. I also had a fever by this time. I took Biogesic and it helped quell the fever for a little while. I even felt well enough to carry the sound equipment I brought back to my car. The fever came back just when I went to class (I only have one class Wednesdays). I was noticeably shivering. At one point, the professor asked if I was in pain. I just said I was feeling cold, because as long as my arm kept still I felt no pain. She turned the a/c down.
I was beyond glad when class ended. The combination of high fever and sore arm made me think twice about driving all the way home single-handedly. It was raining and traffic was still full-blast on the expressway at 7:30pm. I decided I would wade things out at a good friend’s house in Makati until rain and traffic subsided. When I got there he panicked. My fever was uber high and he told me to pop two Biogesic tabs right away. Minutes later, he noticed pale red spots on my left arm. Panic! My other arm had some too, and my neck and chest. What luck! I get a sprain and measles all in one day!! I’m going to miss three exams!! If I get my classmates sick too...
Not only was I in no physical condition to drive at this point, mentally I was a wreck. I called my parents to see if they were anywhere near the area and if one of them could drop by my friend’s house and drive me home or to a hospital. Turned out they were already in Alabang. I had to drive myself, hoping that traffic would be light by 8:30pm. It wasn’t. And somewhere between the EDSA-Ayala tunnel and the Magallanes interchange, I kept my eyes on the road, but I was staring into nothing. My car (or rather, wenk’s car :P) kissed the behind of a pick-up truck rather hard. She lost some teeth. I nearly lost my mind. Good thing the pick-up wasn’t damaged.
To be continued…
PS. Turns out it isn’t measles.
